N.B. The above list is by no means exhaustive. However it should give you an indication of the different types of event we attend.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Safety Advisory Groups (SAG’s), insurance companies and equestrian organizations now stipulate minimum medical requirements for nearly all events.

Therefore, if you have organized any equestrian event, you will be well aware of the fact that the provision of suitable medical cover is now a strict requirement for the vast majority of equestrian events.

All equestrian disciplines now have specific rules and/or guidelines with regard to the minimal medical requirements that are necessary for different types of equestrian event.  In addition, in order to arrange adequate insurance cover for an event, it is nearly always necessary to have appropriate Medical/First Aid cover arranged.  British Equestrian, representing 4.2 million equestrian people, has stated….

You must “understand the requirements and be aware that if they are not fulfilled it is likely that your event insurance will be void. It may be necessary to have separate medical/first aid cover for the crowd and competitors. Minimum requirements are exactly that – you may be much better off with a higher level of cover.  Be aware of the need for adequate cover for the size of crowd expected.  Ensure an adequate Risk Assessment is undertaken and recorded”

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) also has stringent rules and regulations.

Alpha Medical provides professional medical cover for numerous equestrian events every year.  In fact some of our experienced Doctors and Paramedics are members of the Medical Equestrian Association and they specialise in providing high-quality care for equestrian events.

This means that our professional medical personnel are fully aware of the relevant rules and regulations that are stipulated by British Eventing, the Pony Club, Endurance GB and other equestrian organizations. It also means that our knowledgeable and experienced clinicians are used to recognizing and managing various equestrian related injuries and medical conditions in a safe, prompt and effective way.

All of our medical personnel are well-informed with regard to dressage, show jumping, cross-country events, polo and many other equestrian activities. For example, Alpha Medical was chosen by the management of Great Leighs Racecourse to provide medical cover for all of its fixtures.  We provided professional medical cover for all of the horse races and a fully qualified nurse in the Jockey’s Medical Room.  In addition we provided medical cover and special facilities for all of the spectators and officials

Over the years our qualified personnel have provided professional medical cover for numerous equestrian events – including various events attended by principal members of the Royal family.

Alpha Medical now specializes in providing professional medical cover for equestrian events.  Our personnel are therefore used to working in close proximity to horses.  They are also well aware of the “Do’s and Don’ts” of equestrian work and the layout of various equestrian venues in the UK. The latter point is important in time-sensitive situations – e.g. if there is a rider fall in a difficult to reach area of a venue and the casualty is unconscious and/or seriously injured it is obviously essential that our personnel know the layout and respond quickly to the incident to provide professional medical care.

Our medical personnel also understand that many events are carefully timed and it is not unusual for other horses to be on the course when a rider falls or there is another type of medical incident.  We understand the need for safety at all times and the importance of good communication with the organizer and other officials – and we will always do our best to clear the course or arena as soon as possible.

Alpha Medical currently provides event medical cover, on a regular basis, for various clubs and equestrian centres in Essex and Suffolk. We also work in Norfolk, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and other geographical areas.  Over the years our medical personnel have provided high-quality medical cover for numerous events and other assignments that have taken place in other areas of the UK including venues in the Midlands, South, South East and South West of England.

If your equestrian event is taking place in the East of England geographical area, East London or North London we will give you a generous 10% GOODWILL DISCOUNT!  To claim your 10% discount simply quote the reference “EQUEST.10” when you ask us for a quotation.

Please consider all of the following points before you book medical cover for your event.

✔ Alpha Medical Group is owned and managed by Steve Richards who is a healthcare professional who has worked with patients, in ambulances and hospitals, since 1969. Steve is dual-qualified –i.e. he is a practicing HCPC registered Paramedic (No.20819) and an HCPC registered Operating Department Practitioner (No.15341) who qualified in  He therefore has more than five decades of invaluable knowledge and experience with regard to many aspects of patient care, road and air transport and the provision of professional medical cover for many different types of event.

✔ The fact that ‘Alpha Medical’ is run by an experienced healthcare professional is really important because, these days, more or less anyone is legally allowed to advertise an ‘event medical service’ in the UK. This unfortunately means that there are now numerous individuals (including many security guards and “first aid trainers” etc) and non-professional opportunistic businesses who advertise a “medical” or “first aid” service but they do not have an appropriate professional healthcare qualification or the necessary medical knowledge and/or prehospital care experience to effectively manage a wide range of injuries and acute medical conditions that can and do occur at some events.  In addition some of the above non-professional services do not carry out the appropriate checks on personnel and/or may not be well-equipped or may not be fully insured and/or able to give drugs etc. If you use Alpha Medical you will benefit from professional care and maximum value for money.

✔ It is also very important to emphasize that Alpha Medical specializes in providing professional medical cover for equestrian We would like to stress this fact because we all know that equestrian sports can involve minor and serious injuries and there are various potential ‘Mechanisms of Injury’.  An official medical report states the following…”Riding accidents are frequently associated with a high degree of severity of injuries and mortality. Head injuries were the most common followed by injuries to the arms and the thoracic and lumbar spine. The most frequent injuries while handling horses were foot injuries followed by head and mid-facial injuries. With respect to the ‘mechanism of injury’ accidents while riding were predominant (74%) while accidents when handling horses accounted for only 26%.  Girls and young women could be identified as a group at particular risk”.

✔ You will be pleased to know that Alpha Medical is able to offer you various options so you are able to choose the level of medical cover that you would like for your event – taking into account your medical risk assessment and financial situation. We are more than happy to provide just one suitably qualified and experienced medic for your event – e.g. an NHS qualified Ambulance Technician or an HCPC registered Paramedic to work ‘solo’ on a single-crewed vehicle.  Alternatively, we are also able to supply a multi-skilled medical team with specialist vehicles, equipment and medical supplies.

✔ Alpha Medical regularly provides Paramedics, Nurses, Ambulance Technicians, Emergency Medical Technicians and First Response Emergency Care (i.e. Level 3, 4 or 5) qualified personnel for event medical cover. Please note that the respected FREC suite of prehospital care qualifications are nationally recognized and approved by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Faculty of PreHospital Care. For more details please see the “Training Courses” section of this website.

✔ Our company is able to provide professional medical and nursing personnel who have different medical and nursing qualifications to suit the specific requirements of your event. For example, our HCPC registered Paramedics are able to use various drugs and/or intravenous infusions that basic ‘event first aid services’ are not allowed.

✔ In addition, our medical personnel carry advanced life support equipment that qualified first aiders are not legally allowed to use. This is because our experienced Paramedics are professionally qualified and therefore able to perform various life-saving procedures and techniques that can only be lawfully performed by a HCPC registered Paramedic or a qualified medical doctor.

✔ The fact that our sister company (i.e. Alpha Training & Consultancy Limited) is a nationally accredited training provider means that our medical personnel are able to benefit from high quality training courses, regular updates and scenario practice sessions that are delivered and assessed by practicing Paramedics who have the essential real-life experience to ensure that all of our personnel work as a team and are able to manage minor and serious incidents in a safe and professional way

✔ This means that our personnel are knowledgeable and skilled with regard to the safe administration of medical gases, advanced airway management, resuscitation, defibrillation, acute medical emergencies, bleeding, burns and scalds, musculoskeletal injuries, immobilization, decisions, safeguarding, manual handling, health and safety, infection control and many other topics

✔ Please note that, if you use our event medical cover service, you will also be given a very generous 20% DISCOUNT if you book any individual or group of people on ANY course delivered in our dedicated medical training centre by our experienced specialist instructors. Alpha Training and Consultancy Limited delivers a wide range of courses including First Aid at Work, Paediatric Emergency First Aid and statutory Health and Safety courses and updates. For more information please see the “Training Courses” section of this website.

✔ Alpha Medical Group is able to provide a variety of specialist well-equipped vehicles and other medical facilities manned by qualified medical personnel. Subject to availability we can usually supply large conventional Ambulances, Mobile Medical Units, 4×4 Paramedic Units, Rapid Response Vehicles, Quad bikes, Cycle Responders and other resources for your equestrian event.  We also work with other respected event medical companies when they need more specialist vehicles and/or extra medical resources and/or additional medical personnel.

✔ If required, we will also help you to carry out a Medical Risk Assessment and/or produce an Event Safety Management Plan that will be tailored to your specific requirements.

✔ We will always do our best to meet or exceed your medical requirements at no additional cost to you. Please see the example client recommendations below.

“I cannot recommend Steve and the team at Alpha Medical highly enough. We have been using Alpha Medical as our event Paramedics and also our First Aid training providers for several years now and they never fail to provide an incredibly professional, reliable, friendly and affordable service.

Our events range from Affiliated British Eventing Horse Trials and Endurance GB competitive rides to unaffiliated One Day Events and Eventer Trials. The level of cover provided by Alpha Medical always goes well above and beyond the necessary requirements meaning we always feel we are in the safest of hands should an accident happen. My staff always return from their training courses brimming with knowledge and confident to administer first aid should it be required.

As a member of the Medical Equestrian Association Steve is always up-to-date with any new rules and regulations that are imposed by the various governing bodies we run our events under. He has on numerous occasions sourced the latest equipment and drugs required (often at short notice) at considerable expense to himself without adding that cost onto us.

We feel very privileged to work with such a professional and likeable man and have already recommended Alpha Medical to all Pony Clubs and Riding Clubs that organise their own events here. Five Stars!!!!!”

“Easton Harriers Pony Club has used the services of Stephen and his team for several years. They provide exceptionally professional medical cover at our equestrian events at Poplar Park. As we are a pony club with many young members we are reassured by the fact that we are always supplied with a fully qualified paramedic who has specific training within the equestrian industry. This has certainly been a huge help on occasions. We do not hesitate in recommending the services of Alpha Medical”.

    How can we help you?

    ALTERNATIVELY PLEASE TELEPHONE  01473 499995 ANYTIME We’re at YOUR service 24 HOURS a day ~ 7 DAYS a week ~ 365 DAYS a year

If you would like a written ‘fixed fee’ quotation it will obviously be supplied to you free of charge and you will be under no obligation whatsoever to use Alpha Medical Group for your equestrian event. However, if you would like to use our company, we respectfully suggest that you firmly book us a.s.a.p. because we allocate our medical personnel, vehicles and equipment on a ‘first-come-first-served’ basis.

In addition, if your event is going to be held on a WEEKEND and/or on a BANK HOLIDAY, it is even more important to firmly book your event medical cover as early as possible.
